Market types you will meet
Most of betting comes down to a handful of market structures that repeat across sports. Recognising them makes any coupon easy to read, whether you are on a Premier League match or a Test cricket session.
| Market | What you are betting on | Common in |
|---|---|---|
| Match result (1X2) | home win, draw, or away win | football, rugby |
| Moneyline | the outright winner, no draw | tennis, basketball, NFL |
| Handicap / spread | a result after a virtual head start or deficit | football, NBA, NFL |
| Totals (over/under) | combined goals, points or runs vs a line | all sports |
| Both teams to score | whether both sides find the net | football |
| Each-way | a selection to win and to place | racing, golf |
| Player props | an individual's shots, points, cards, etc. | football, basketball |
Handicaps and totals exist to make even lopsided fixtures bettable. A -1.5 handicap on a strong favourite means they must win by two or more for the bet to land, which often returns a better price than a straight win when the favourite is heavily backed.
